I don’t know about you, but I have always practiced the philosophy that if you find something you LOVE to do, you never work a day in your life. I have always believed this statement and can honestly say that 40+ years into my career, I love what I do as much as the day I started it. What drives me is that every day is a new day, especially in the advertising business. As important, I have believed that if you take care of your business, your business will take care of you – and you can’t take care of your business if you don’t LOVE what you do.
At 78Madison, my wife and I have worked hard at creating a culture that flows throughout the agency; a culture that could be sustained even after we retire…a culture that would create commitment rather than compliance. My overall philosophy has revolved around five pillars: Serve your clients well, always; Treat people with respect; Give something back; Recognize that “profit” isn’t a dirty word; and Do the right thing.
This is what we live by at 78Madison. It’s a team effort with a lot of moving parts, and it takes a lot of commitment.
Today, our greatest ongoing challenge is adapting to the changes in society, including how to address the newest generations. In many ways we are experiencing the biggest cultural changes I have ever been part of. I’m a baby boomer, but the generations that have followed think very differently. They want to be part of something BIG, and they look at the world and life in ways no other generation has ever seen before. So, if you aren’t in tune with these generational desires, you won’t LOVE what you do because you will realize your staff doesn’t LOVE what they do.
Remember, if you don’t take care of your business, it won’t take care of you.
